Industry overview This class comprises establishments principally engaged in using timber sawing and planing machinery to manufacture planks, square timber, and other timber products using logs (including hewn lumber, cut timber, etc.) as raw materials. Establishments that manufacture wooden boxes, packing crates, and others from purchased timber materials are classified under Group 1 23 [1232], and those that manufacture wooden sashes (door or window frames) and other finished wooden products are classified under Group 1 22 [1221]. This Group does not include timber that is sawn or planed on construction sites as part of civil engineering work.

However, establishments engaged in the manufacture of furniture, sliding doors and screens are classified in the Major group 13 -- Manufacture of furniture and fixtures, and those engaged in producing wooden patterns, wooden music instruments, toys, sports goods, brooms and rakes are classified in the Major group 32 -- Other manufacturing industries. Establishments engaged in the manufacture, repair and modification of wooden products using lumber at the site of construction as a part of the construction work are classified in the Division D -- CONSTRUCTION, and establishments engaged in manufacturing and retailing wooden products upon receiving orders by individuals are classified in the Division I -- WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE.
