FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Japan Standard Industrial Classification and this reference site.

Quick answers

This site is a reference tool, not the official government portal. Always verify against official sources.

What is JSIC?

The Japan Standard Industrial Classification (JSIC) is the official classification system used by the Japanese government to categorise economic activities. It is maintained by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (Soumu). Revision 14 took effect on 1 April 2024.

How is JSIC structured?

JSIC has a four-level hierarchy: Section (letter A–T), Major group (2 digits), Group (3 digits), and Industry (4 digits). Each level narrows the classification from broad sector to specific activity.

How many industries does JSIC cover?

JSIC Rev. 14 covers 1411 industries across 519 groups, 98 major groups and 20 sections.

How do I search for a code?

Use the search page. You can search by code (e.g. 0111) or keyword (e.g. rice, finance, construction). The search is fuzzy — it will find partial matches.

How do I browse the structure?

Start from the structure overview or any section page. Each section has an expandable tree showing major groups, groups and industries.

Is this site official?

No. This is an independent reference site. The official sources are published by Soumu and e-Stat; links are listed on the sources page.

Where can I report an error?
