Overview

ISCO is a tool for organising jobs into a clearly defined set of groups according to the tasks and duties undertaken in the job. It is used for international reporting, comparison, and exchange of statistical and administrative data about occupations.

ISCO-08 was adopted in December 2007 and published in 2008. It replaced ISCO-88.

Structure

4-level hierarchy: 10 Major Groups (1-digit), 43 Sub-major Groups (2-digit), 130 Minor Groups (3-digit), 436 Unit Groups (4-digit).

Managers, Professionals, Technicians, Clerical Support, Service Workers, Agricultural Workers, Craft Workers, Plant Operators, Elementary Occupations, Armed Forces.

Relationship to JSOC

JSOC (Japan Standard Occupational Classification) is modelled on ISCO-08. The top-level structure reflects the international framework while accommodating Japanese labour market characteristics.

JSOC has 12 major categories vs ISCO's 10. Administrative workers and security workers get separate categories in JSOC. Industry-specific occupations (construction, manufacturing) are grouped differently.
