The Japan Standard Commodity Classification (JSCC) is a comprehensive 6-level hierarchical system containing approximately 17,000 items. It classifies all goods and products produced and traded in the Japanese economy.
The classification uses a 6-digit hierarchical code system with six levels of aggregation. Each level narrows the classification from broad category to specific commodity. Codes contain embedded hierarchy information through digit grouping.
The classification was last comprehensively revised in 1990. It remains in use for statistical purposes but has not undergone the regular revision cycle of classifications like JSIC. A partial update was issued for the 1995 census.
The commodity classification maps to JSIC industry codes at the production level. The newer 生産物分類 2024 more directly links products to JSIC industries and serves as the current product classification standard.
